How the HSC Course Works
The HSC is split into two parts:
- Year 11 (Preliminary) – This is your foundation year, where you build up essential skills and knowledge for each subject.
- Year 12 (HSC) – Examine human rights at a local, national, and international level, and understand how they’re protected and enforced around the world.
Do You Have to Remember Year 11 Content?
Yep! Even though your HSC exams only test Year 12 content, a lot of it is based on what you learned in Year 11. Think of it like a video game—Year 11 is Level 1, and you can’t get to Level 2 (Year 12) without learning the basics first!
Examples of How Subjects Progress
- English: In Year 11, you’ll focus on different text types and analysis skills. By Year 12, you’ll use these skills to tackle prescribed texts and craft more complex responses.
- Maths: In Year 11, you cover fundamental topics that prepare you for the trickier, more applied content in Year 12. If you’re doing Mathematics Standard, you’ll also choose between Standard 1 or Standard 2 in Year 12.
- Science (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Physics): Year 11 gives you an introduction to key concepts, while Year 12 takes those ideas and applies them in greater depth—especially in depth studies and practical investigations.
